Dhal Rebellion (1767–1777)
The Dhal Rebellion is regarded as the first major tribal uprising against the British in Jharkhand. The rebellion took place in the Dhalbhum region of Singhbhum in protest against British interference in the local administration. When the British began interfering in the governance of Dhalbhum and attempted to weaken the traditional system of administration, widespread dissatisfaction spread among the local rulers and the people.
The rebellion was led by Jagannath Dhal, who organized the local people against British policies. During the conflict, the British attempted to replace him with Neemu Dhal, their own supporter, as the ruler. However, the people continued to support Jagannath Dhal.
Due to continuous resistance and strong public support, the British were ultimately compelled to restore Jagannath Dhal as the ruler. This event is considered one of the earliest successful tribal resistances against British rule in Jharkhand.
