Chuar Rebellion (1769–1805 AD)

The Chuar Rebellion was an important uprising against the British East India Company's new land revenue system and economic exploitation. Its impact was mainly seen in the Jungle Mahals region and the adjoining areas of present-day Jharkhand.

Due to the increase in land revenue, abolition of traditional land rights, and growing pressure on local zamindars, the Chuar community revolted repeatedly against British rule. The movement continued in several phases for nearly three decades.

The British referred to the Bhumij people as "Chuar" or "Chuhar," which is why this uprising came to be known as the Chuar Rebellion.
