Quick Revision & Practice MCQs

6.1.1 Meaning of a Cube

The cube of a number is obtained by multiplying the number by itself three times.

Rule:
a3 = a × a × a
Examples:
4³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64
(−4)³ = (−4) × (−4) × (−4) = −64
Exam Trap:
a³ is not 3a. For example, 5³ = 125, whereas 3 × 5 = 15.

6.1.2 Perfect Cubes

An integer is a perfect cube if it can be expressed as the cube of an integer.

Examples:
0 = 0³; 1 = 1³; 8 = 2³; 27 = 3³; −125 = (−5)³.

Negative integers can be perfect cubes. This differs from perfect squares, which cannot be negative over the integers.

6.1.3 Important Cubes: 1 to 30

6.1.4 Sign, Parity and Size

• A positive number has a positive cube.
• A negative number has a negative cube.
• The cube of an even integer is even.
• The cube of an odd integer is odd.
• If a > 1, then a³ > a.
• If 0 < a < 1, then a³ < a.
Example:
(0.5)³ = 0.125, which is smaller than 0.5.
Exam Trap:
Cubing does not always increase the value of a number.

6.1.5 Unit-Digit Pattern of Cubes

1111
2882
3773
4444
5555

Example:
The unit digit of 247³ is 3 because 7³ ends in 3.
Important:
A perfect cube may end in any digit. The last digit alone cannot prove that a number is a perfect cube.

6.1.6 Prime-Factorisation Test

A positive integer is a perfect cube if and only if every exponent in its prime factorisation is divisible by 3.
Example:
1728 = 2⁶ × 3³ = (2² × 3)³ = 12³.
Both exponents are divisible by 3, so 1728 is a perfect cube.

432 = 2⁴ × 3³ is not a perfect cube because 4 is not divisible by 3.

The numbers 0 and 1 are also perfect cubes; handle them directly.

6.1.7 Trailing Zeros

If a positive integer has exactly k trailing zeros, its cube has exactly 3k trailing zeros.
20³ = 8000: one trailing zero becomes three.
100³ = 1000000: two trailing zeros become six.
A positive perfect cube has a multiple of three trailing zeros, but this condition alone is insufficient.
For example, 2000 has three trailing zeros but is not a perfect cube.

6.1.8 Numbers That Are Both Squares and Cubes

A positive integer is both a perfect square and a perfect cube if and only if it is a perfect sixth power.
64 = 8² = 4³ = 2⁶.
729 = 27² = 9³ = 3⁶.

6.2.1 Meaning of Cube Root

The real cube root of N is the real number whose cube is N.

If a³ = N, then ∛N = a.
∛216 = 6; ∛(−216) = −6; ∛0 = 0.
Exam Trap:
∛64 = 4, not ±4. The equation x³ = 64 has exactly one real solution: x = 4.

6.2.2 Prime-Factorisation Method

Group identical prime factors in sets of three. Take one factor from each group and multiply the selected factors.

Example: Find ∛13824.
13824 = 2⁹ × 3³.
∛13824 = 2³ × 3 = 24.
Exponent Rule:
∛(p³ᵃ × q³ᵇ) = pᵃ × qᵇ.

6.2.3 Cube Roots of Fractions

For real a and b, where b ≠ 0:
∛(a/b) = ∛a / ∛b.
Examples:
∛(343/512) = 7/8.
∛(−125/216) = −5/6.

For a mixed fraction, first convert it into an improper fraction:
∛(3 3/8) = ∛(27/8) = 3/2.

6.2.4 Cube Roots of Decimals

Convert a terminating decimal into a fraction with a power of 10 in the denominator.

Examples:
∛0.008 = ∛(8/1000) = 2/10 = 0.2.
∛0.000008 = ∛(8/1000000) = 2/100 = 0.02.
∛15.625 = ∛(15625/1000) = 25/10 = 2.5.
Scaling:
∛(1000N) = 10∛N.
∛(N/1000) = ∛N/10.

6.2.5 Product, Quotient and Inverse Rules

For real a and b:
∛(ab) = ∛a × ∛b.
∛(a³) = a.
(∛a)³ = a.
For b ≠ 0: ∛(a/b) = ∛a / ∛b.
Cube roots do not generally distribute over addition:
∛(8 + 27) ≠ ∛8 + ∛27.
The right-hand side equals 5, but 5³ = 125, not 35.

6.3.1 Least Multiplier for a Perfect Cube

Make every prime exponent a multiple of 3 by adding the smallest required exponent.

Exponent remainder when divided by 3:
0 → add 0; 1 → add 2; 2 → add 1.
Example: Find the least positive integer that multiplies 72 into a perfect cube.
72 = 2³ × 3².
Only one more factor of 3 is needed.
Least multiplier = 3.
72 × 3 = 216 = 6³.
Example: For 360.
360 = 2³ × 3² × 5.
Required multiplier = 3 × 5² = 75.
360 × 75 = 27000 = 30³.

6.3.2 Least Divisor for a Perfect Cube

Remove the remainder of each prime exponent on division by 3.

Example: Find the least positive integer by which 864 must be divided.
864 = 2⁵ × 3³.
Remove 2² so that the remaining exponent of 2 is 3.
Least divisor = 4.
864 ÷ 4 = 216 = 6³.
The least multiplier and least divisor need not be equal.
For 72, the least multiplier is 3, but the least divisor is 9.

6.3.3 Least Perfect Cube Divisible by Given Numbers

Find their LCM, then raise every prime exponent to the next multiple of 3, leaving existing multiples of 3 unchanged.

Example: Find the least positive perfect cube divisible by 12, 18 and 30.
LCM = 180 = 2² × 3² × 5.
Required cube = 2³ × 3³ × 5³ = 27000.

6.3.4 Least Addition and Subtraction

Least addition = next perfect cube − given number.
Least subtraction = given number − previous perfect cube.
Example: For 200.
5³ = 125 and 6³ = 216.
Least addition = 216 − 200 = 16.
Least subtraction = 200 − 125 = 75.

If the number is already a perfect cube, the least non-negative addition or subtraction is 0.

6.3.5 Cube-Root Shortcut for Known Perfect Cubes

For a known positive perfect cube with an integer cube root from 10 to 99:

1. Separate the last three digits.
2. In the remaining left group, find the greatest cube not exceeding that group. Its root gives the tens digit.
3. Use the original number's last digit to obtain the units digit.
Example: Find ∛389017.
Split: 389 | 017.
7³ = 343 ≤ 389 < 512 = 8³, so the tens digit is 7.
The number ends in 7, so the root ends in 3.
Cube root = 73.
Check: 73³ = 389017.
Limitation:
This shortcut assumes the number is a perfect cube. It is not a test for arbitrary numbers.
For example, applying only these digit steps to 1001 may suggest 10, but 10³ = 1000.

6.3.6 Digits in an Integer Cube Root

If a positive perfect cube has d decimal digits, its integer cube root has ceil(d/3) digits.
Equivalently, cubes with 3n−2, 3n−1 or 3n digits have n-digit integer cube roots.
512 has 3 digits → ∛512 = 8 has 1 digit.
1728 has 4 digits → ∛1728 = 12 has 2 digits.
389017 has 6 digits → ∛389017 = 73 has 2 digits.

6.4.1 Useful Cube Identities

(a + b)³ = a³ + 3a²b + 3ab² + b³.
(a − b)³ = a³ − 3a²b + 3ab² − b³.
a³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² − ab + b²).
a³ − b³ = (a − b)(a² + ab + b²).
a³ + b³ = (a + b)³ − 3ab(a + b).
Example:
If a + b = 7 and ab = 10:
a³ + b³ = 7³ − 3 × 10 × 7 = 133.

6.4.2 Consecutive Cubes and Sum of Cubes

(n + 1)³ − n³ = 3n² + 3n + 1.

1³ + 2³ + … + n³ = [n(n + 1)/2]².
Examples:
6³ − 5³ = 3 × 25 + 15 + 1 = 91.
1³ + 2³ + 3³ + 4³ + 5³ = 15² = 225.

6.4.3 BODMAS and Mixed Expressions

Example:
∛1728 + 3³ ÷ 9 − ∛0.008
= 12 + 27 ÷ 9 − 0.2
= 12 + 3 − 0.2
= 14.8.
Evaluate powers and roots before ordinary addition and subtraction. Division and multiplication have equal priority and are performed from left to right; the same applies to addition and subtraction.

6.4.4 Equations and Comparison

Equation:
If x³ = −3375, then x = −15.

Comparison:
The cube function and real cube-root function are strictly increasing.
Since −9 < −8, we have ∛(−9) < ∛(−8).

6.4.5 Greatest and Smallest n-Digit Perfect Cubes

Compare nearby integer cubes with the smallest and greatest numbers having the required number of digits.

Smallest four-digit perfect cube:
9³ = 729; 10³ = 1000 → 1000.

Greatest four-digit perfect cube:
21³ = 9261; 22³ = 10648 → 9261.

6.4.6 Geometrical Applications

Volume of a cube = side³.
Side of a cube = ∛volume.
Example:
A cube has volume 2744 cm³.
Side = ∛2744 = 14 cm.

If the side is doubled, the volume becomes 2³ = 8 times the original volume.

Common Exam Traps

• Writing ∛64 = ±4.
• Treating a³ as 3a.
• Assuming every cube is greater than the original number.
• Declaring a number a perfect cube using only its unit digit.
• Confusing least multiplier with least divisor.
• Applying the two-digit cube-root shortcut without confirming the perfect-cube condition.
• Writing ∛(a + b) = ∛a + ∛b.
• Ignoring the negative sign or misplacing the decimal point.

Quick Revision

• Perfect-cube prime exponents are multiples of 3.
• ∛(a³) = a for every real a.
• Negative numbers have negative real cube roots.
• Cube-root digit grouping uses groups of three.
• Multipliers complete prime-factor triples; divisors remove incomplete triples.
• ∛(1000N) = 10∛N.
• Both square and cube → sixth power, for positive integers.
• Volume scales as the cube of the side-length scale factor.

Quick Revision एवं Practice MCQs

6.1.1 किसी Number का Cube

a3 = a × a × a
4³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64
(−4)³ = (−4) × (−4) × (−4) = −64
Exam Trap:

6.1.2 Perfect Cube

0 = 0³; 1 = 1³; 8 = 2³; 27 = 3³; −125 = (−5)³।

• यदि a > 1 है, तो a³ > a।
• यदि 0 < a < 1 है, तो a³ < a।
Exam Trap:

Unit-Digit Pattern

Perfect-Cube Test

1728 = 2⁶ × 3³ = (2² × 3)³ = 12³।

432 = 2⁴ × 3³ पूर्ण घन नहीं है, क्योंकि 4, 3 से विभाज्य नहीं है।

6.1.7 Trailing Zeros

64 = 8² = 4³ = 2⁶।
729 = 27² = 9³ = 3⁶।

6.2.1 Cube Root

यदि a³ = N है, तो ∛N = a।
∛216 = 6; ∛(−216) = −6; ∛0 = 0।
Exam Trap:

6.2.2 Prime Factorisation Method

13824 = 2⁹ × 3³।
∛13824 = 2³ × 3 = 24।
Exponent Rule:
∛(p³ᵃ × q³ᵇ) = pᵃ × qᵇ।

6.2.3 Fraction का Cube Root

∛(a/b) = ∛a / ∛b।
∛(343/512) = 7/8।
∛(−125/216) = −5/6।

∛(3 3/8) = ∛(27/8) = 3/2।

6.2.4 Decimal का Cube Root

∛0.008 = ∛(8/1000) = 2/10 = 0.2।
∛0.000008 = ∛(8/1000000) = 2/100 = 0.02।
∛15.625 = ∛(15625/1000) = 25/10 = 2.5।
Scaling:
∛(1000N) = 10∛N।
∛(N/1000) = ∛N/10।

6.2.5 Product, Quotient एवं Inverse Rules

∛(ab) = ∛a × ∛b।
∛(a³) = a।
(∛a)³ = a।
b ≠ 0 होने पर: ∛(a/b) = ∛a / ∛b।

Least Multiplier

72 = 2³ × 3²।
Least Multiplier = 3।
72 × 3 = 216 = 6³।
360 = 2³ × 3² × 5।
360 × 75 = 27000 = 30³।

6.3.2 Perfect Cube के लिए Least Divisor

864 = 2⁵ × 3³।
Least Divisor = 4।
864 ÷ 4 = 216 = 6³।

Divisible Least Perfect Cube

LCM = 180 = 2² × 3² × 5।

Subtraction

Least Addition =
Least Subtraction =
5³ = 125 और 6³ = 216।
Least Addition = 216 − 200 = 16।
Least Subtraction = 200 − 125 = 75।

Cube-Root Shortcut

7³ = 343 ≤ 389 < 512 = 8³, इसलिए tens digit = 7।

Cube Identities

(a + b)³ = a³ + 3a²b + 3ab² + b³।
(a − b)³ = a³ − 3a²b + 3ab² − b³।
a³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² − ab + b²)।
a³ − b³ = (a − b)(a² + ab + b²)।
a³ + b³ = (a + b)³ − 3ab(a + b)।
यदि a + b = 7 और ab = 10:
a³ + b³ = 7³ − 3 × 10 × 7 = 133।

6.4.2 Consecutive Cubes एवं Sum of Cubes

(n + 1)³ − n³ = 3n² + 3n + 1।

1³ + 2³ + … + n³ = [n(n + 1)/2]²।
6³ − 5³ = 3 × 25 + 15 + 1 = 91।
1³ + 2³ + 3³ + 4³ + 5³ = 15² = 225।

6.4.3 BODMAS एवं Mixed Expressions

∛1728 + 3³ ÷ 9 − ∛0.008
= 12 + 27 ÷ 9 − 0.2
= 12 + 3 − 0.2
= 14.8।

Comparison

Equation:
यदि x³ = −3375, तो x = −15।

Comparison:

Smallest n-Digit Perfect Cubes

9³ = 729; 10³ = 1000 → 1000।

21³ = 9261; 22³ = 10648 → 9261।

6.4.6 Geometrical Applications

Common Exam Traps

• a³ को 3a समझना।
• ∛(a + b) = ∛a + ∛b लिखना।

Quick Revision

• प्रत्येक वास्तविक a के लिए ∛(a³) = a।
• Cube-root digit grouping
