1. Square of a Number

Key Rule:
The square of a number n is:

n2 = n × n

2. Perfect Square

Rule:
A positive integer N is a perfect square if N = n2 for some integer n.

Examples: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64 and 81.

3. Important Squares

Remember:
12=1, 22=4, 32=9, 42=16, 52=25
102=100, 152=225, 202=400, 252=625, 302=900

4. Possible Unit Digits of Perfect Squares

Rule:
A perfect square may end only in:

0, 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9.

5. Impossible Unit Digits

Remember:
A perfect square can never end in:

2, 3, 7 or 8.

6. Unit-Digit Mapping for Squares

Pattern:
0→0, 1→1, 2→4, 3→9, 4→6,
5→5, 6→6, 7→9, 8→4, 9→1

7. Odd and Even Squares

Rule:
Square of an even integer is even.
Square of an odd integer is odd.

8. Prime-Factorisation Test for a Perfect Square

Fundamental Rule:
A positive integer is a perfect square if and only if every exponent in its prime factorisation is even.

9. Trailing Zeros in a Perfect Square

Property:
A perfect square cannot have an odd number of trailing zeros.

10. Perfect Square Ending in 5

Property:
If a perfect square ends in 5, its last two digits must be 25.

11. Difference of Consecutive Squares

Formula:

(n+1)2 − n2 = 2n+1

12. Integers Between Consecutive Squares

Rule:
There are exactly 2n integers strictly between n2 and (n+1)2.

13. Sum of First n Odd Numbers

Identity:

1+3+5+...+(2n−1)=n2

14. Digital Root of a Perfect Square

Useful Test:
The digital root of a positive perfect square can only be:

1, 4, 7 or 9.
Exam Tip:
This is an elimination test, not a complete proof.

15. Meaning of Square Root

Rule:
If a2=N and a≥0, then:

√N=a

16. Principal Square Root

Important:
√49=7, not ±7.
But:
x2=49 gives x=±7.

17. Square Root of a Square

Fundamental Property:
For any real number a:

√(a2)=|a|

18. Prime-Factorisation Method for Square Roots

Method:
Group identical prime factors into pairs and take one factor from every pair.

19. Exponent Rule for Square Roots

Rule:
If N=p2aq2b, then:

√N=paqb

20. Square Root of a Fraction

Rule:
For a≥0 and b>0:

√(a/b)=√a/√b

21. Square Root of a Mixed Fraction

Method:
Convert the mixed fraction into an improper fraction first, then take the square root.

22. Square Root of a Decimal

Example:
√0.81=0.9
√0.0081=0.09
√2.25=1.5

23. Pairing Decimal Places

Rule:
For exact terminating decimal squares, decimal digits may be grouped in pairs from the decimal point.

24. Long-Division Method

Remember:
In the long-division square-root method, digits are grouped in pairs beginning from the decimal point and moving in both directions.

25. Estimating a Non-Perfect Square Root

Rule:
If:

n22,

then:
n<√N

26. Integer Part of a Square Root

Rule:
If n22, the integer part of √N is n.

27. Approximation Near a Perfect Square

Shortcut:
If N is close to a2:

√N ≈ a + (N−a2)/(2a)

28. Square Root of a Product

Property:
For a,b≥0:

√(ab)=√a×√b

29. Square Root Does Not Distribute over Addition

Incorrect:
√(a+b)=√a+√b

This is generally false.

30. Scaling by Powers of 10

Rules:
√(100N)=10√N
√(10000N)=100√N
√(N/100)=√N/10

31. Least Multiplier for a Perfect Square

Rule:
Multiply by the product of the prime factors whose exponents are odd.

32. Least Divisor for a Perfect Square

Rule:
Divide by the minimum factors necessary to make all remaining prime exponents even.

33. Least Number to Add

Rule:
Least addition = Next perfect square − Given number.

34. Least Number to Subtract

Rule:
Least subtraction = Given number − Previous perfect square.

35. Least Perfect-Square Multiple of a Number

Method:
Prime-factorise the number and multiply by the minimum factors required to make every exponent even.

36. Least Perfect Square Divisible by Several Numbers

Method:
Find the LCM first, then convert that LCM into a perfect square by balancing odd prime exponents.

37. Square of a Number Ending in 5

Shortcut:
For 852:
8×9=72 and append 25.

852=7225

38. Squares Near 100

Identity:
(100±a)2=10000±200a+a2

39. General Square Identities

Formulas:
(a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2
(a−b)2=a2−2ab+b2

40. Next Perfect Square from a Known Square

Formula:
(n+1)2=n2+2n+1

41. Previous Perfect Square from a Known Square

Formula:
(n−1)2=n2−(2n−1)

42. Unit Digit of an Integer Square Root

Useful Pairing:
Square ends in 1 → root ends in 1 or 9
4 → 2 or 8
5 → 5
6 → 4 or 6
9 → 3 or 7
0 → 0

43. Square Root of a Perfect Square Ending in 25

Property:
If an integer perfect square ends in 25, its positive integer square root ends in 5.

44. Difference of Two Squares

Identity:

a2−b2=(a+b)(a−b)

45. Greatest Perfect Square Not Exceeding N

Rule:
If k=floor(√N), then the greatest perfect square ≤N is:

k2

46. Smallest Perfect Square Not Less than N

Rule:
If N is not already a perfect square and k=floor(√N), the smallest perfect square greater than N is:

(k+1)2

47. Greatest and Smallest 4-Digit Perfect Squares

Important Values:
Greatest 4-digit perfect square = 992 = 9801
Smallest 4-digit perfect square = 322 = 1024

48. Number of Digits in an Integer Square Root

Rule:
A positive perfect square having 2n−1 or 2n digits has an n-digit positive integer square root.

49. BODMAS in Square-Root Problems

Order:
Brackets → Orders/Roots → Division/Multiplication → Addition/Subtraction

Before Solving:
• Identify familiar squares first.
• Check unit digits before lengthy calculation.
• Use prime exponents for perfect-square formation.

To make all prime exponents even, multiply by 2 × 5 = 10.

Hence x = 540k + 10.

The least such value divisible by 31 occurs for k = 4:
