Chapter 15 : Internet and Web Technologies Internet and Web Technologies

Internet and Web Technologies

The Internet supports information searches, online applications, email, file sharing and many other services. This chapter explains important Internet concepts and practical facts about using the Web.

Scope: This material covers the Computer Awareness level of general recruitment examinations. Browser shortcuts primarily refer to Google Chrome on Windows; other browsers and platforms may differ.

1. Internet versus World Wide Web

BasisInternetWorld Wide Web
MeaningA global system of interconnected networks. An information system of web resources connected through hyperlinks.
RoleThe underlying communication network. One of the major services available over the Internet.
ExamplesCommunication supporting email, file transfer, Internet calls and the Web.Opening websites and web pages in a browser.

WWW stands for World Wide Web. Tim Berners-Lee invented the Web in 1989 while working at CERN.

Exam trap: Tim Berners-Lee is credited with inventing the World Wide Web, not the entire Internet. Internet and WWW are not synonyms.

2. Internet, Intranet, Extranet and ISP

  • Internet: The worldwide system of interconnected networks.
  • Intranet: An organisation's private network, which may use Internet technologies such as the Web.
  • Extranet: Controlled access to selected organisational resources for authorised outsiders, such as suppliers or partners.
  • ISP: Internet Service Provider; an organisation supplying Internet connectivity.

Example: An internal employee portal can use an intranet. Restricted access provided to authorised suppliers can form part of an extranet arrangement.

Remember: Not every password-protected website is an intranet. Services on the public Internet can also require a login.

3. Webpage, Website, Homepage and Web Portal

TermMeaning
WebpageAn individual web document or page displayed in a browser.
WebsiteA collection of related web pages and resources.
HomepageThe main or starting page of a website.
Web PortalAn entry page or website providing access to multiple services or resources.
HyperlinkA link to another resource or a location within the same page.

Example: A recruitment website can contain separate web pages for applications, results and admit cards.

A hyperlink need not be text; an image or another clickable element can also function as a link.

4. Web Browser versus Search Engine

BasisWeb BrowserSearch Engine
FunctionRetrieves web resources and displays web pages.Helps find relevant resources using search terms.
NatureA user software application.A search service.
ExamplesGoogle Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Safari.Google Search, Bing and DuckDuckGo.

Remember: Google Chrome is a browser; Google Search is a search engine. Searching from an address bar does not make them the same thing.

  • Address Bar: The area for entering a URL or search query.
  • Tab: A way to open separate pages within one browser window.
  • Bookmark/Favourite: A saved link for later access.
  • History: A local record of previously visited pages.
  • Refresh/Reload: Loads the current page again.

5. URLs and Their Main Parts

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It specifies the address of a web resource.

Consider this fictional example:

https://exam.example.com/notices/list?year=2026#dates
PartExample valueRole
SchemehttpsIndicates the access scheme or protocol.
Hostexam.example.comThe target host.
Path/notices/listThe resource path.
Queryyear=2026Additional parameters.
FragmentdatesIdentifies a part of the resource.

Symbols: ? introduces the query; # introduces the fragment. The fragment is not sent to the server in an ordinary HTTP request.

6. Domain Names, DNS and Hosting

  • Domain Name: A readable name used to identify resources.
  • DNS: Domain Name System; maps names to associated records such as IP addresses.
  • Web Hosting: The arrangement that makes website files and services available.
  • Web Server: Software and its associated system that handle web requests and return responses.

Example: In exam.example.com, com is the top-level domain, and exam is a subdomain of example.com. www is also a common subdomain or host label; it is not compulsory in every website address.

Domain exampleGeneral identification
.comA generic top-level domain originally associated with commercial use.
.orgA generic top-level domain commonly used by organisations.
.inIndia's country-code top-level domain.
.ukThe United Kingdom's country-code top-level domain.
Important distinction: Domain registration and hosting are separate services. Buying a domain does not automatically create or publish website content. A .org extension alone does not prove that a website is trustworthy or nonprofit.

7. HTTP and HTTPS

HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A browser typically sends a request, and a server returns a response. HTTP is a major protocol for exchanging web resources.

HTTPS is secure HTTP communication using TLS. It helps protect confidentiality and communication integrity and authenticate the server.

Security misconception: HTTPS indicates a protected connection, not a guarantee that every claim or offer on the website is genuine. Fraudulent websites can also use HTTPS.

HTTP is fundamentally stateless. Websites can maintain login or other state using mechanisms such as cookies and server-side sessions.

8. How a Webpage Typically Opens

  1. The user enters a URL or follows a link.
  2. DNS supplies the host's IP address when needed.
  3. The browser establishes a connection, including secure communication for HTTPS.
  4. The browser sends a request, and the server returns a response.
  5. The browser processes HTML and obtains resources such as CSS, JavaScript and images.
  6. The page is displayed to the user.

Remember: Cached data or existing connections can avoid repeating every step. Opening one page can involve multiple requests for separate resources.

9. HTML, CSS and JavaScript

TechnologyFull form or identificationMain role
HTMLHypertext Markup LanguageWebpage structure and content.
CSSCascading Style SheetsPresentation, including colours, fonts, spacing and layout.
JavaScriptA programming language.Interactive behaviour and programmed operations.

Example: HTML can define an application form's labels and inputs, CSS can style them, and JavaScript can display a message in response to a user's action.

Exam facts: HTML is a markup language. Java and JavaScript are different languages. JavaScript can also run outside a browser, including on servers.

10. Static and Dynamic Webpages

  • Static Webpage: Its main content is supplied as a pre-prepared file. It can still include interactive features such as JavaScript.
  • Dynamic Webpage: Content can be generated or updated according to a request, user, database or other conditions.
  • Client-side Processing: Work performed in the user's browser.
  • Server-side Processing: Work performed on the server.

Example: Showing a particular candidate's application details after login is dynamic behaviour.

Remember: Static does not mean that a page can never be edited. Dynamic does not merely mean that it contains moving pictures or animation.

11. Cookies, Cache, History and Private Browsing

TermRole
CookieSmall information stored by a browser, used for purposes such as session identification and preferences.
CacheLocal copies of images, stylesheets and other resources that can be reused.
HistoryA record of visited pages.
BookmarkA link deliberately saved for later use.

Deleting cookies can end login sessions or remove preferences. Clearing the cache can make the next page load slower because resources need to be downloaded again.

Incognito/Private Browsing: After the private session closes, the browser does not retain that session's local browsing history and temporary site data in the ordinary way. It does not make the user invisible online.

Important limitation: Websites, employers, schools or an ISP may still see parts of the activity. Downloaded files and bookmarks created during private browsing can remain.

12. Search Engines and Effective Searching

Search engines generally discover pages through crawling, organise information through indexing and arrange search results through ranking.

Search methodExamplePurpose
Quotation marks"computer awareness"Helps search for an exact phrase.
site:site:gov.in recruitmentRestricts the search to a specified site or domain.
Minus signjaguar -carExcludes an unwanted term.
filetype:computer syllabus filetype:pdfSearches for a particular file type.

Note: Operator support varies by search service. These are common Google Search examples.

A high search position does not prove that a page is official or accurate. For recruitment information, verify the issuing organisation, notification number and date.

13. Downloads, Uploads, Streaming and Web Forms

  • Download: Receiving data from a remote system onto your device.
  • Upload: Sending data from your device to a remote system.
  • Streaming: Playing incoming media without waiting for the entire item to arrive.
  • Web Form: A form that collects information from users.

Example: Saving an admit card to your phone is downloading. Sending your photograph with an application is uploading. Watching an online lecture as it arrives is streaming.

Form controls: A text box accepts text. A radio-button group normally permits one choice. Checkboxes can allow several independent choices. A dropdown provides a list of options.

Application caution: Uploading a photograph and successfully submitting the complete application are different steps. Check the final confirmation and application number.

14. Common HTTP Status Codes

CodeNameSimple meaning
200OKThe request succeeded.
301Moved PermanentlyThe resource has permanently moved to another address.
403ForbiddenThe server understands the request but refuses to fulfil it.
404Not FoundThe requested resource was not found.
500Internal Server ErrorThe server encountered an unexpected internal problem.

Remember: A 404 does not mean that the entire Internet has stopped working. The link may be incorrect or the particular page may have been removed.

15. Important Browser Shortcuts and Quick Revision

ShortcutAction in Google Chrome on Windows
Ctrl + LSelect the address bar.
Ctrl + TOpen a new tab.
Ctrl + WClose the current tab.
Ctrl + Shift + TReopen a recently closed tab.
Ctrl + TabMove to the next tab.

  • The Internet is the underlying network; the WWW is one of its major services.
  • A browser and a search engine are different.
  • URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
  • HTML defines structure, CSS presentation and JavaScript behaviour.
  • HTTPS protects communication but does not guarantee a website's honesty.
  • Cache, cookies and history serve different purposes.
  • Private browsing does not provide complete anonymity.

1. Internet और World Wide Web का अंतर

आधारInternetWorld Wide Web

  • ISP: Internet Service Provider;

3. Webpage, Website, Homepage और Web Portal

Web Portal

4. Web Browser और Search Engine

आधारWeb BrowserSearch Engine
उदाहरणGoogle Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari।Google Search, Bing, DuckDuckGo।

  • Address Bar: URL
  • Bookmark/Favourite:
  • Refresh/Reload:

https://exam.example.com/notices/list?year=2026#dates
Hostexam.example.com
Path/notices/list
Queryyear=2026अतिरिक्त पैरामीटर।

6. Domain Name, DNS और Hosting

  • Domain Name:
  • Web Hosting:
  • Web Server:

.inभारत का Country-Code Top-Level Domain।

HTMLHypertext Markup Language
CSSCascading Style Sheets

10. Static और Dynamic Webpages

  • Dynamic Webpage:
  • Server-side Processing: Server

11. Cookies, Cache, History और Private Browsing

12. Search Engine

Quotation Marks"computer awareness"
Minus Signjaguar -car

13. Download, Upload, Streaming और Web Forms

  • Web Form:

HTTP Status Codes

Code
500Internal Server ErrorServer

Ctrl + LAddress Bar
Ctrl + HHistory
Ctrl + JDownloads
Ctrl + Shift + Nनई Incognito Window।
  • Private Browsing
