Computer Fundamentals
A clear understanding of basic terminology and computer operations helps build a foundation for computer-awareness questions. This chapter explains computers, data and information, the input–process–output cycle, basic components, characteristics and limitations.
1. What Is a Computer?
A computer is a programmable electronic device that accepts data, processes it according to instructions, produces output and can store data or results.
A computer is not limited to calculations. It can prepare documents, edit images, support communication, maintain records and perform many other tasks.
Example: Entering a student's marks, calculating their total and average, displaying the result and saving the marksheet involve different computer functions.
Remember: COMPUTER is not a standard technical acronym. Invented “full forms” should not be treated as established facts.
2. Data and Information
Data consists of facts, values, symbols or records on which a computer operates. Information is data organised or interpreted in a meaningful and useful context.
| Basis |
Data |
Information |
| Common meaning |
Raw facts, values or records |
Data organised or processed in a meaningful context |
| Example |
Marks in three subjects: 60, 70 and 80 |
Total marks: 210; average marks: 70 |
| Use |
Provides the basis for processing |
Helps users understand results and make decisions |
Data is not necessarily numerical. Names, addresses, photographs, videos and recorded speech are also data. Information produced by one process can become input data for another process.
3. The Input–Process–Output Cycle
The basic working of a computer can be understood through the IPO Cycle — Input, Process, Output. Storage supports these functions.
| Function |
Meaning |
Example |
| Input |
Accepting data and instructions |
Entering marks using a keyboard |
| Processing |
Performing operations on data according to instructions |
Calculating the total and average |
| Output |
Presenting the result |
Displaying or printing the result |
| Storage |
Retaining data or results for later use |
Saving the marksheet file |
Processing includes calculations, comparisons, sorting and selecting records according to conditions. Not every output must be permanently saved.
Important distinction: Displaying a file is output; saving a file is storage. A touchscreen can perform both input and output functions.
4. Hardware, Software and Users
Hardware
Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer system. Examples include the keyboard, monitor, motherboard, CPU and SSD.
Software
Software includes programs and associated instructions and data used by a computer system. An operating system and MS Word are examples of software.
Program
A program is a set of instructions prepared to perform a task. Hardware carries out operations according to these instructions.
User
A user is a person who uses, operates or manages a computer system. Examples include a data-entry operator, student, programmer and system administrator. Some introductory texts use the term Peopleware for people associated with computer systems.
Example: A keyboard is hardware, MS Word is software, and the person preparing a letter in MS Word is a user.
5. Introduction to the CPU
CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. It executes instructions and plays a central role in computer processing.
- ALU — Arithmetic Logic Unit: Performs arithmetic and logical operations, such as addition and comparison.
- CU — Control Unit: Directs and coordinates instruction execution.
- Registers: Small, fast storage locations inside the CPU that hold data, instructions or intermediate results.
The CPU is commonly called the “brain of the computer.” This is an analogy, not a claim of human-like understanding.
Avoid this confusion: The entire desktop cabinet is not the CPU. The cabinet contains several components, including the motherboard, processor and storage devices.
6. Main Characteristics of Computers
| Characteristic |
Meaning |
Example |
| Speed |
Performing operations rapidly |
Processing calculations for many records in a short time |
| Accuracy |
Producing correct results with correct data, instructions and proper operation |
Calculating the correct average from correct marks and a correct formula |
| Diligence |
Performing repetitive work without human fatigue or boredom |
Checking thousands of records using the same rule |
| Versatility |
Performing different types of tasks |
Preparing letters, editing images and calculating marks |
| Automation |
Performing configured tasks with reduced manual intervention |
Running a scheduled backup automatically |
| Storage capacity |
Retaining data and retrieving it when needed |
Maintaining application records and documents |
Diligence and versatility are different: Repeating a task without human fatigue illustrates diligence; performing different kinds of tasks illustrates versatility.
7. Limitations and GIGO
Computer results depend on the input, program, configuration and proper functioning of the system. Incorrect data, an incorrect formula or faulty hardware can produce incorrect results. Storage capacity is also finite.
GIGO stands for Garbage In, Garbage Out. Incorrect or unsuitable input can produce incorrect or misleading output.
Example: If 4500 is entered instead of 450, a correctly functioning addition program will not produce the intended correct total.
A computer can apply programmed decision rules, such as “display Pass if marks are 40 or above.” This should not be confused with independent human-like understanding.
Incorrect statement: “A computer never produces incorrect results.”
Correct understanding: Correct results require correct data, correct instructions and proper system operation.
8. Validation and Verification
| Basis |
Validation |
Verification |
| Purpose |
Checking whether data satisfies defined rules |
Checking whether entered data matches its source |
| Example |
Checking that marks are between 0 and 100 |
Comparing entered marks with the original marksheet |
| Key point |
Satisfying a rule does not prove factual accuracy |
Checks whether data has been accurately copied from its source |
Example: The actual mark is 67, but 76 is entered. Since 76 is also between 0 and 100, a range check may accept it. Comparing it with the original marksheet can reveal the error.
9. Common Data-Processing Operations
- Calculation: Finding the total of marks.
- Comparison: Checking whether marks are equal to or greater than the pass mark.
- Sorting: Arranging applicants by name or marks.
- Filtering: Displaying only applicants from a particular district.
- Classification: Grouping applicants by district.
- Summarisation: Producing district-wise applicant totals.
Sorting changes the order of records; filtering selects records that meet a condition. Applying a filter does not inherently delete other underlying records.
10. Soft Copy and Hard Copy
A soft copy is an electronic version of a document, such as a PDF or an on-screen document. A hard copy is a physical version, typically a paper printout.
A PDF stored on a hard disk or SSD remains a soft copy. The physical nature of its storage device does not make the document a hard copy.
11. Quick Revision
- A computer accepts data, processes it, produces output and can store data or results.
- IPO = Input–Process–Output.
- Data is not limited to numbers.
- Hardware consists of physical components; software includes programs.
- CPU = Central Processing Unit.
- The ALU performs arithmetic and logical operations.
- Diligence concerns repetitive work; versatility concerns different types of work.
- GIGO = Garbage In, Garbage Out.
- Validation checks rules; verification checks against the source.
- A PDF is a soft copy; its paper printout is a hard copy.
12. Practice Questions

(Hardware)
(Software)
(Program)
(User)
- ALU — Arithmetic Logic Unit:
- CU — Control Unit:
- Registers: CPU
Speed |
Accuracy |
Automation |
Storage Capacity |
GIGO का पूर्ण रूप Garbage In, Garbage Out है।
Validation |
Verification |
- IPO = Input–Process–Output.
- CPU = Central Processing Unit.
- GIGO = Garbage In, Garbage Out.
