Chapter 1 : Number System

Number of Digits

The number of digits of an integer can often be determined without writing the entire number. Powers of 10 provide the basic boundaries, while logarithms allow us to count digits of very large powers and products efficiently. These methods are especially useful in competitive examinations where direct calculation would be impractical.

1. What is Meant by Number of Digits?

The number of symbols used to write a positive integer in the decimal system is called its number of digits.

Examples:

  • 7 has 1 digit.
  • 42 has 2 digits.
  • 583 has 3 digits.
  • 12,457 has 5 digits.

2. One-Digit Numbers

The positive one-digit integers are:

1 to 9

Thus, there are 9 positive one-digit numbers.

3. Two-Digit Numbers

The smallest two-digit positive integer is 10 and the largest is 99.

Hence:

10 ≤ N ≤ 99

There are:

99 − 10 + 1 = 90

two-digit positive integers.

4. Three-Digit Numbers

The smallest three-digit positive integer is 100 and the largest is 999.

100 ≤ N ≤ 999

Number of three-digit positive integers:

999 − 100 + 1 = 900

5. General Range of d-Digit Positive Integers

A positive integer N has exactly d digits if and only if:

10d−1 ≤ N < 10d

Equivalently:

10d−1 ≤ N ≤ 10d − 1

6. Smallest and Largest d-Digit Numbers

DigitsSmallest NumberLargest Number
119
21099
3100999
410009999
d10d−110d − 1

7. Number of d-Digit Positive Integers

From 10d−1 to 10d − 1, the total number of integers is:

(10d − 1) − 10d−1 + 1

= 9 × 10d−1

Formula: Number of positive d-digit integers = 9 × 10d−1.

8. Example: Number of Five-Digit Numbers

Using:

9 × 10d−1

for d = 5:

9 × 104 = 90,000

Therefore, there are 90,000 five-digit positive integers.

9. Powers of 10 and Number of Digits

For every non-negative integer n:

10n has n + 1 digits.

Examples:

  • 101 = 10 → 2 digits
  • 102 = 100 → 3 digits
  • 105 = 100000 → 6 digits

10. Numbers Just Below a Power of 10

The number:

10n − 1

consists of n digits, all equal to 9.

Example:

105 − 1 = 99,999

which has 5 digits.

11. Basic Digit Formula Using Logarithms

For any positive integer N:

Number of digits in N = ⌊log10N⌋ + 1

Here ⌊x⌋ denotes the greatest integer less than or equal to x.

12. Why the Logarithm Formula Works

If N has d digits:

10d−1 ≤ N < 10d

Taking log base 10:

d − 1 ≤ log10N < d

Therefore:

⌊log10N⌋ = d − 1

and hence:

d = ⌊log10N⌋ + 1

13. Example: Digits in 3578

Since:

103 < 3578 < 104

3578 has 4 digits.

Equivalently:

3 ≤ log103578 < 4

so floor(log103578) = 3 and digit count = 4.

14. Number of Digits in a Power an

For a positive integer a and positive integer n:

Digits in an = ⌊n log10a⌋ + 1

because:

log10(an) = n log10a

15. Example: Number of Digits in 220

Using:

log102 ≈ 0.30103

we get:

20 × 0.30103 = 6.0206

Therefore:

Digits = ⌊6.0206⌋ + 1 = 7

Indeed, 220 = 1,048,576.

16. Example: Number of Digits in 350

Use:

log103 ≈ 0.477121

Then:

50 × 0.477121 = 23.85605

Therefore:

Digits = 23 + 1 = 24

17. Important Common Logarithm Values

NumberApproximate log10
20.30103
30.47712
50.69897
70.84510
101
Exam Use: Values of log 2, log 3, log 5 and log 7 are frequently enough for standard digit-count questions.

18. Useful Relationship Between log 2 and log 5

Since:

2 × 5 = 10

we have:

log 2 + log 5 = 1

Thus:

log 5 = 1 − log 2 ≈ 0.69897

19. Number of Digits in 5n

Using log 5 ≈ 0.69897:

Digits in 5n = ⌊0.69897n⌋ + 1

20. Example: Digits in 525

25 × 0.69897 = 17.47425

Therefore:

Digits = 17 + 1 = 18

21. Number of Digits in a Product

For positive numbers A and B:

log(AB) = log A + log B

Therefore:

Digits in AB = ⌊log A + log B⌋ + 1

22. Example: Digits in 250 × 340

Take logarithm:

50 log 2 + 40 log 3

≈ 50(0.30103) + 40(0.477121)

= 15.0515 + 19.08484 = 34.13634

Therefore:

Number of digits = 34 + 1 = 35

23. Number of Digits in a Quotient

If A/B is a positive integer or positive real value whose digit count is required:

log(A/B) = log A − log B

So for a positive integer quotient Q:

Digits in Q = ⌊log A − log B⌋ + 1

24. Example: Digits in 2100 / 230

First simplify:

2100 / 230 = 270

Then:

70 × 0.30103 = 21.0721

Therefore:

Digits = 22

25. Simplify Before Using Logarithms

Whenever possible, simplify powers and products before applying logarithms.

Example:

230 × 530 = 1030

Therefore the number has:

31 digits

No logarithm calculation is required.

26. Important 2 × 5 Shortcut

Whenever equal powers of 2 and 5 appear:

2n × 5n = 10n

Hence the product contains exactly n + 1 digits.

27. Example with Unequal Powers of 2 and 5

Find the number of digits in:

220 × 515

Pair fifteen 2s with fifteen 5s:

220 × 515 = 25 × 1015

= 32 × 1015

This is 32 followed by 15 zeros, so it has:

2 + 15 = 17 digits

28. Digits in Numbers of the Form a × 10n

If a is a positive integer not ending in a decimal point and has d digits, then:

a × 10n

is obtained by appending n zeros to a.

Therefore:

Number of digits = d + n

29. Example: Digits in 347 × 1012

347 has 3 digits.

Appending 12 zeros gives:

3 + 12 = 15 digits

30. When Does an Have Exactly d Digits?

an has exactly d digits when:

10d−1 ≤ an < 10d

Taking logarithms:

d − 1 ≤ n log a < d

31. Finding n for a Fixed Digit Count

If an is required to have exactly d digits, solve:

(d − 1)/log a ≤ n < d/log a

Then select integer values of n satisfying the inequality.

32. Example: Smallest n such that 2n Has 10 Digits

For at least 10 digits:

2n ≥ 109

Taking logarithms:

n log 2 ≥ 9

n ≥ 9/0.30103 ≈ 29.897

Therefore the smallest integer n is:

30

33. Check the Boundary Carefully

When logarithmic calculation gives an integer boundary or a value extremely close to an integer, use adequate precision.

Important: Rounding the logarithm too early can change the floor value and therefore produce a wrong digit count.

34. Number of Digits in n!

For factorials, use:

Digits in n! = ⌊log(1) + log(2) + ... + log(n)⌋ + 1

Equivalently:

Digits in n! = ⌊log(n!)⌋ + 1

35. Why Logs are Useful for Factorials

Even moderately large factorials become enormous. Instead of computing n!, use:

log(n!) = log 1 + log 2 + log 3 + ... + log n

Then apply the digit formula.

36. Example: Number of Digits in 10!

We know:

10! = 3,628,800

Therefore, 10! has 7 digits.

Using logs gives the same result:

log(10!) ≈ 6.55976

So:

Digits = 6 + 1 = 7

37. Example: Number of Digits in 20!

Using logarithms:

log(20!) ≈ 18.3861

Therefore:

Digits in 20! = 18 + 1 = 19

38. Stirling's Approximation

For large n, factorials may be estimated using Stirling's approximation:

n! ≈ √(2πn)(n/e)n

Taking base-10 logarithms:

log(n!) ≈ n log(n/e) + ½ log(2πn)

Advanced Exam Tool: Stirling's approximation is useful when n is large and direct summation of logarithms is impractical. For ordinary SSC/JSSC-type questions, the simpler log-sum method is usually sufficient.

39. Digit Count of n! Using Stirling's Approximation

Using Stirling:

Digits ≈ ⌊n log10(n/e) + ½log10(2πn)⌋ + 1

This is highly accurate for sufficiently large n.

40. Number of Digits in a Perfect Square

If a number N has d digits, its square can have either:

2d − 1 or 2d digits

because:

10d−1 ≤ N < 10d

implies:

102d−2 ≤ N2 < 102d

41. Example: Square of a Three-Digit Number

A three-digit integer N satisfies:

100 ≤ N ≤ 999

Therefore N2 can have either:

5 or 6 digits

Examples:

  • 1002 = 10,000 → 5 digits
  • 9992 = 998,001 → 6 digits

42. Number of Digits in a Product of Two Integers

If A has m digits and B has n digits, then AB has either:

m + n − 1 or m + n digits

43. Why a Product Has m+n−1 or m+n Digits

Since:

10m−1 ≤ A < 10m

and:

10n−1 ≤ B < 10n

multiplying gives:

10m+n−2 ≤ AB < 10m+n

Thus AB can have only m+n−1 or m+n digits.

44. Example: Product of a 4-Digit and a 3-Digit Number

The product can have:

4 + 3 − 1 = 6

or:

4 + 3 = 7

digits.

45. Number of Digits in Powers Without Exact Log Values

Sometimes comparison with nearby powers of 10 is enough.

Example: Find the number of digits in 910.

Since:

910 = 3,486,784,401

it has 10 digits, but direct calculation is unnecessary if suitable bounds are known.

46. Bounding Method

If:

10k ≤ N < 10k+1

then N has:

k + 1 digits

This is often the fastest method when N can be compared easily with powers of 10.

47. Example Using Bounds

Find the number of digits in 210.

Since:

210 = 1024

and:

103 ≤ 1024 < 104

the number has 4 digits.

48. Digits in a Number Followed by Zeros

If a positive integer A has d digits and is multiplied by 10n, then n zeros are appended.

Therefore:

Digits in A × 10n = d + n

This shortcut is especially useful after pairing powers of 2 and 5.

49. Example: 240 × 535

Pair 35 powers:

240 × 535 = 25 × 1035

= 32 × 1035

32 has 2 digits, followed by 35 zeros.

Therefore:

Total digits = 37

50. Finding the Number of Digits of Very Large Expressions

For expressions involving several powers:

  1. Simplify common bases or complementary factors such as 2 and 5.
  2. Convert the expression to a product of powers if possible.
  3. Take logarithms only after simplification.
  4. Apply floor(log N) + 1.

51. Solved Example: Digits in 1220

Use:

log 12 = log(3 × 4) = log 3 + 2log 2

≈ 0.477121 + 2(0.30103)

= 1.079181

Then:

20 × 1.079181 = 21.58362

Therefore:

1220 has 22 digits.

52. Solved Example: Digits in 6100

Since:

log 6 = log 2 + log 3

≈ 0.30103 + 0.477121 = 0.778151

Therefore:

100 × 0.778151 = 77.8151

Hence:

Number of digits = 78

53. Solved Example: Digits in 2100 × 590

Pair ninety factors of 2 and 5:

2100 × 590 = 210 × 1090

= 1024 × 1090

1024 has 4 digits.

Appending 90 zeros gives:

94 digits

54. Solved Example: Possible Digits in Product

A has 5 digits and B has 7 digits. How many digits can AB have?

Use:

m + n − 1 or m + n

Therefore:

AB can have 11 or 12 digits.

55. Solved Example: Number of Four-Digit Numbers

Four-digit positive integers range from 1000 to 9999.

Count:

9999 − 1000 + 1 = 9000

or directly:

9 × 103 = 9000

56. Leading Zeros are Not Counted

In ordinary decimal representation, leading zeros do not contribute to the number of digits.

For example:

0075 = 75

So the number has 2 digits, not 4.

57. Zero Itself

The integer 0 is represented by one symbol:

0

Therefore:

0 has 1 digit.

58. Negative Integers

The minus sign is not counted as a digit.

Example:

−583

has 3 digits.

59. Common Exam Traps

Trap 1: 10n has n + 1 digits, not n.
Trap 2: 10n − 1 has exactly n digits.
Trap 3: For positive integer N, digits = ⌊log N⌋ + 1.
Trap 4: For an, multiply log a by n before taking the floor.
Trap 5: Do not round the logarithm before applying the floor function.
Trap 6: Equal powers of 2 and 5 should first be combined into powers of 10.
Trap 7: The product of an m-digit and an n-digit positive integer has either m+n−1 or m+n digits.
Trap 8: A d-digit positive integer lies from 10d−1 to 10d−1.
Trap 9: Leading zeros are not counted as digits.
Trap 10: The minus sign of a negative integer is not a digit.

  • Leading zeros and a negative sign are not counted as digits.

Factorial

Digits in n! = ⌊log(1) + log(2) + ... + log(n)⌋ + 1

Digits in n! = ⌊log(n!)⌋ + 1

log(n!) = log 1 + log 2 + log 3 + ... + log n

में Digits

10! = 3,628,800

में 7 digits हैं।

Logarithm method से:

log(10!) ≈ 6.55976

Digits = 6 + 1 = 7

में Digits

Using logarithms:

log(20!) ≈ 18.3861

Digits in 20! = 18 + 1 = 19

38. Stirling's Approximation

n! ≈ √(2πn)(n/e)n

Base-10 logarithm

log(n!) ≈ n log(n/e) + ½ log(2πn)

39. Stirling Formula से n! का Digit Count

Stirling approximation

102d−2 ≤ N2 < 102d

41. उदाहरण: Three-Digit Number का Square

Three-digit integer N

100 ≤ N ≤ 999

6 digits

  • 1002 = 10,000 → 5 digits
  • 9992 = 998,001 → 6 digits

Digits

10m−1 ≤ A < 10m

और:

10n−1 ≤ B < 10n

Product

Product में:

4 + 3 − 1 = 6

या:

4 + 3 = 7

Digits

46. Bounding Method

10k ≤ N < 10k+1

तो N में:

k + 1 digits

Digits

210 = 1024

और:

103 ≤ 1024 < 104

Digits

यदि positive integer A में d digits हैं और उसे 10n से multiply किया जाए, तो A के बाद n zeros जुड़ जाते हैं।

Digits in A × 10n = d + n

Total digits = 2 + 35 = 37

Strategy

  3. Same bases की powers को combine करें।

Digits

log 12 = log(3 × 4) = log 3 + 2log 2

≈ 0.477121 + 2(0.30103)

= 1.079181

अब:

20 × 1.079181 = 21.58362

1220 में 22 digits हैं।

Digits

log 6 = log 2 + log 3

≈ 0.30103 + 0.477121 = 0.778151

100 × 0.778151 = 77.8151

Number of digits = 77 + 1 = 78

Total digits = 4 + 90 = 94

Possible Digits

Formula:

m + n − 1 या m + n

5 + 7 − 1 = 11

या:

5 + 7 = 12

Four-digit positive integers 1000

0075 = 75

0

0 में 1 digit है।

58. Negative Integers में Digits

गलती 4: an के लिए पहले n × log a निकालें, उसके बाद floor लें।
गलती 6: Equal powers of 2 और 5 को पहले powers of 10 में बदलना चाहिए।

  • an में digits = ⌊n log10a⌋ + 1।
  • log 2 ≈ 0.30103।
  • log 3 ≈ 0.47712।
  • log 5 ≈ 0.69897।
  • log 7 ≈ 0.84510।
  • log 2 + log 5 = 1।

= 38.9075.

Number of digits = 38 + 1 = 39.

(Number of Digits)

Positive one-digit integers

999 − 100 + 1 = 900

5. d-Digit Positive Integer की General Range

10d−1 ≤ N ≤ 10d − 1

6. Smallest और Largest d-Digit Numbers

119
21099
3100999
410009999
d10d−110d − 1

7. d-Digit Positive Integers

d = 5 के लिए:

9 × 104 = 90,000

9. Powers of 10 और Number of Digits

  • 101 = 10 → 2 digits
  • 102 = 100 → 3 digits
  • 105 = 100000 → 6 digits

Basic Digit Formula

Number of digits = ⌊log10N⌋ + 1

12. Logarithm Formula

10d−1 ≤ N < 10d

Base 10 logarithm

d − 1 ≤ log10N < d

⌊log10N⌋ = d − 1

d = ⌊log10N⌋ + 1

Logarithm

3 ≤ log103578 < 4

Digits in an = ⌊n log10a⌋ + 1

log10(an) = n log10a

Digits

log102 ≈ 0.30103

20 × 0.30103 = 6.0206

Digits = ⌊6.0206⌋ + 1 = 7

220 = 1,048,576

जिसमें 7 digits हैं।

Digits

Use:

log103 ≈ 0.477121

तब:

50 × 0.477121 = 23.85605

Digits = 23 + 1 = 24

Common Logarithm Values

Approximate log10
20.30103
30.47712
50.69897
70.84510
101

2 × 5 = 10

log 2 + log 5 = log 10 = 1

log 5 = 1 − log 2 ≈ 0.69897

Digits in 5n = ⌊0.69897n⌋ + 1

Digits

25 × 0.69897 = 17.47425

Digits = 17 + 1 = 18

Positive numbers A और B के लिए:

log(AB) = log A + log B

Digits in AB = ⌊log A + log B⌋ + 1

Digits

Logarithm लें:

50 log 2 + 40 log 3

≈ 50(0.30103) + 40(0.477121)

= 15.0515 + 19.08484 = 34.13634

Number of digits = 34 + 1 = 35

यदि Q = A/B एक positive integer है, तो:

log Q = log A − log B

Digits in Q = ⌊log A − log B⌋ + 1

Digits

पहले simplify करें:

2100 / 230 = 270

अब:

70 × 0.30103 = 21.0721

Digits = 21 + 1 = 22

230 × 530 = 1030

31 digits

Unequal Powers

Digits

220 × 515

15 factors of 2 को 15 factors of 5 के साथ pair करें:

220 × 515 = 25 × 1015

= 32 × 1015

Total digits = 2 + 15 = 17

Number of Digits

यदि positive integer a में d digits हैं, तो:

a × 10n

Number of digits = d + n

Digits

Total digits = 3 + 12 = 15

30. an में Exactly d Digits कब होंगे?

an में exactly d digits होंगे यदि:

10d−1 ≤ an < 10d

Logarithm

d − 1 ≤ n log a < d

(d − 1)/log a ≤ n < d/log a

Smallest n

10 digits

2n ≥ 109

Logarithm

n log 2 ≥ 9

n ≥ 9/0.30103 ≈ 29.897

अतः smallest integer n:

30

33. Boundary

Factorial

Digits in n! = ⌊log(1) + log(2) + ... + log(n)⌋ + 1

Digits in n! = ⌊log(n!)⌋ + 1

log(n!) = log 1 + log 2 + log 3 + ... + log n

में Digits

10! = 3,628,800

में 7 digits हैं।

Logarithm method से:

log(10!) ≈ 6.55976

Digits = 6 + 1 = 7

में Digits

Using logarithms:

log(20!) ≈ 18.3861

Digits in 20! = 18 + 1 = 19

38. Stirling's Approximation

n! ≈ √(2πn)(n/e)n

Base-10 logarithm

log(n!) ≈ n log(n/e) + ½ log(2πn)

39. Stirling Formula से n! का Digit Count

Stirling approximation

102d−2 ≤ N2 < 102d

41. उदाहरण: Three-Digit Number का Square

Three-digit integer N

100 ≤ N ≤ 999

6 digits

  • 1002 = 10,000 → 5 digits
  • 9992 = 998,001 → 6 digits

Digits

10m−1 ≤ A < 10m

और:

10n−1 ≤ B < 10n

Product

Product में:

4 + 3 − 1 = 6

या:

4 + 3 = 7

Digits

46. Bounding Method

10k ≤ N < 10k+1

तो N में:

k + 1 digits

Digits

210 = 1024

और:

103 ≤ 1024 < 104

Digits

यदि positive integer A में d digits हैं और उसे 10n से multiply किया जाए, तो A के बाद n zeros जुड़ जाते हैं।

Digits in A × 10n = d + n

Total digits = 2 + 35 = 37

Strategy

  3. Same bases की powers को combine करें।

Digits

log 12 = log(3 × 4) = log 3 + 2log 2

≈ 0.477121 + 2(0.30103)

= 1.079181

अब:

20 × 1.079181 = 21.58362

1220 में 22 digits हैं।

Digits

log 6 = log 2 + log 3

≈ 0.30103 + 0.477121 = 0.778151

100 × 0.778151 = 77.8151

Number of digits = 77 + 1 = 78

Total digits = 4 + 90 = 94

Possible Digits

Formula:

m + n − 1 या m + n

5 + 7 − 1 = 11

या:

5 + 7 = 12

Four-digit positive integers 1000

0075 = 75

0

0 में 1 digit है।

58. Negative Integers में Digits

गलती 4: an के लिए पहले n × log a निकालें, उसके बाद floor लें।
गलती 6: Equal powers of 2 और 5 को पहले powers of 10 में बदलना चाहिए।

  • an में digits = ⌊n log10a⌋ + 1।
  • log 2 ≈ 0.30103।
  • log 3 ≈ 0.47712।
  • log 5 ≈ 0.69897।
  • log 7 ≈ 0.84510।
  • log 2 + log 5 = 1।
