Divisibility Rules
Divisibility rules help us determine whether one integer divides another exactly without performing full division. They are extremely useful in Number System, HCF-LCM, factorisation, missing-digit questions, simplification and many competitive-exam problems.
1. Meaning of Divisibility
An integer a is divisible by a non-zero integer b if division by b leaves remainder 0.
a = bq
for some integer q.
Example: 84 is divisible by 7 because 84 = 7 × 12.
2. Why Divisibility Rules are Useful
Instead of performing long division, divisibility tests use selected digits, digit sums or simple arithmetic operations to decide quickly whether a number is exactly divisible by another number.
Exam Advantage: Divisibility rules are especially useful when numbers are very large or when one or more digits are unknown.
3. Divisibility by 2
A number is divisible by 2 if its last digit is even.
Last digit = 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8
Examples: 248, 1,370 and 56,984 are divisible by 2.
Only the unit digit needs to be checked.
4. Divisibility by 3
A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.
Example: For 7,452:
7 + 4 + 5 + 2 = 18
Since 18 is divisible by 3, 7,452 is divisible by 3.
5. Divisibility by 4
A number is divisible by 4 if the number formed by its last two digits is divisible by 4.
Example: 73,516 → last two digits = 16.
Since 16 is divisible by 4, 73,516 is divisible by 4.
Reason: Every multiple of 100 is divisible by 4, so only the last two digits affect divisibility by 4.
6. Divisibility by 5
A number is divisible by 5 if its last digit is:
0 or 5
Examples: 235, 8,920 and 10,005 are divisible by 5.
7. Divisibility by 6
A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by both 2 and 3.
Rule: Divisible by 6 ⇔ even number + digit sum divisible by 3.
Example: 1,458 is even and 1 + 4 + 5 + 8 = 18, which is divisible by 3. Therefore, 1,458 is divisible by 6.
8. Divisibility by 7
To test divisibility by 7:
- Separate the last digit.
- Double the last digit.
- Subtract this double from the remaining number.
- Repeat if necessary.
If the result is divisible by 7, the original number is divisible by 7.
Example: Test 203.
20 − 2 × 3 = 20 − 6 = 14
Since 14 is divisible by 7, 203 is divisible by 7.
9. Another Example of Divisibility by 7
Test 1,617:
161 − 2 × 7 = 147
Repeat:
14 − 2 × 7 = 0
Therefore, 1,617 is divisible by 7.
The intermediate result may become 0 or even negative. Divisibility is unaffected; a negative multiple of 7 is still divisible by 7.
10. Divisibility by 8
A number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by its last three digits is divisible by 8.
Example: 57,624 → last three digits = 624.
624 ÷ 8 = 78, so 57,624 is divisible by 8.
11. Divisibility by 9
A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.
Example: 63,927:
6 + 3 + 9 + 2 + 7 = 27
Since 27 is divisible by 9, 63,927 is divisible by 9.
12. Divisibility by 10
A number is divisible by 10 if its last digit is 0.
Examples: 40, 1,230 and 98,760.
13. Divisibility by 11
For divisibility by 11, find the difference between the sums of digits in alternate positions.
If this difference is 0 or a multiple of 11, the number is divisible by 11.
Example: Test 27,918.
(2 + 9 + 8) − (7 + 1) = 19 − 8 = 11
Since 11 is divisible by 11, 27,918 is divisible by 11.
14. Divisibility by 11 when Difference is Zero
Example: Test 121.
(1 + 1) − 2 = 0
Therefore, 121 is divisible by 11.
Remember: Difference 0 is acceptable because 0 is divisible by 11.
15. Divisibility by 12
Since 12 = 3 × 4 and HCF(3, 4) = 1, a number is divisible by 12 if it is divisible by both 3 and 4.
Example: 2,436:
- Digit sum = 2 + 4 + 3 + 6 = 15 → divisible by 3.
- Last two digits = 36 → divisible by 4.
Therefore, 2,436 is divisible by 12.
16. Divisibility by 13
One useful test for 13 is:
- Separate the last digit.
- Multiply it by 4.
- Add the result to the remaining number.
- Repeat if necessary.
If the resulting number is divisible by 13, the original number is divisible by 13.
Example: Test 286.
28 + 4 × 6 = 28 + 24 = 52
Since 52 = 13 × 4, 286 is divisible by 13.
17. Divisibility by 14
Since 14 = 2 × 7 and 2 and 7 are co-prime, a number is divisible by 14 if it is divisible by both 2 and 7.
Example: 350 is even and 350 ÷ 7 = 50. Therefore, 350 is divisible by 14.
18. Divisibility by 15
Since 15 = 3 × 5 and HCF(3, 5) = 1:
Divisible by 15 ⇔ divisible by both 3 and 5.
Example: 4,635 ends in 5 and its digit sum is 18. Hence it is divisible by both 5 and 3, so it is divisible by 15.
19. Divisibility by 16
A number is divisible by 16 if the number formed by its last four digits is divisible by 16.
Example: 123,456 → last four digits = 3,456.
3,456 ÷ 16 = 216, so 123,456 is divisible by 16.
For numbers having fewer than four digits, simply test the whole number.
20. Divisibility by 18
Since 18 = 2 × 9 and HCF(2, 9) = 1:
Divisible by 18 ⇔ divisible by both 2 and 9
Example: 7,452 is even and its digit sum is 18. Therefore, 7,452 is divisible by 18.
21. Divisibility by 20
A number is divisible by 20 if its last two digits are divisible by 20.
Equivalently, the last two digits must be:
00, 20, 40, 60 or 80
Example: 18,360 is divisible by 20.
22. Divisibility by 24
Since 24 = 3 × 8 and HCF(3, 8) = 1:
Divisible by 24 ⇔ divisible by both 3 and 8
Example: 2,184 has digit sum 15 and last three digits 184, which is divisible by 8. Therefore, 2,184 is divisible by 24.
23. Divisibility by 25
A number is divisible by 25 if its last two digits are:
00, 25, 50 or 75
Examples: 5,725, 3,250 and 8,900 are divisible by 25.
24. Divisibility by 36
Since 36 = 4 × 9 and HCF(4, 9) = 1:
Divisible by 36 ⇔ divisible by both 4 and 9
Example: 3,456 has digit sum 18 and its last two digits 56 are divisible by 4. Therefore, 3,456 is divisible by 36.
25. Divisibility by 40
Since 40 = 5 × 8 and HCF(5, 8) = 1, a number is divisible by 40 if it is divisible by both 5 and 8.
A convenient direct observation is that its last three digits must form a multiple of 40.
Example: 13,560 → 560 ÷ 40 = 14, so it is divisible by 40.
26. Divisibility by 45
Since 45 = 5 × 9:
Divisible by 45 ⇔ divisible by both 5 and 9
Example: 5,985 ends in 5 and its digit sum is 27. Hence 5,985 is divisible by 45.
27. Divisibility by 50
A number is divisible by 50 if its last two digits are:
00 or 50
Examples: 1,250, 7,400 and 98,950.
28. Divisibility by 72
Since 72 = 8 × 9 and HCF(8, 9) = 1:
Divisible by 72 ⇔ divisible by both 8 and 9
Example: 5,184 has digit sum 18 and its last three digits 184 are divisible by 8. Therefore, 5,184 is divisible by 72.
29. Divisibility by 75
Since 75 = 3 × 25 and HCF(3, 25) = 1:
Divisible by 75 ⇔ divisible by both 3 and 25
Example: 5,775 has digit sum 24 and ends in 75. Therefore, it is divisible by 75.
30. Divisibility by 88
Since 88 = 8 × 11 and HCF(8, 11) = 1:
Divisible by 88 ⇔ divisible by both 8 and 11
This combined rule is often faster than direct division.
31. Divisibility by 90
Since 90 = 9 × 10 and HCF(9, 10) = 1:
Divisible by 90 ⇔ divisible by both 9 and 10
Therefore, the number must end in 0 and its digit sum must be divisible by 9.
32. Divisibility by 99
Since 99 = 9 × 11 and HCF(9, 11) = 1:
Divisible by 99 ⇔ divisible by both 9 and 11
33. Divisibility by 100
A number is divisible by 100 if its last two digits are 00.
Examples: 900, 12,300 and 456,700.
34. Divisibility by 125
A number is divisible by 125 if the number formed by its last three digits is divisible by 125.
Possible three-digit endings include:
000, 125, 250, 375, 500, 625, 750, 875
Example: 48,625 is divisible by 125 because 625 = 125 × 5.
35. Divisibility by Powers of 2
For powers of 2, only a limited number of final digits needs to be checked.
| Divisor | Digits to Check |
|---|
| 2 | Last 1 digit |
| 4 | Last 2 digits |
| 8 | Last 3 digits |
| 16 | Last 4 digits |
| 32 | Last 5 digits |
This works because 10k is divisible by the corresponding power of 2 once k is large enough.
36. Divisibility by Powers of 5
Similar ending-based tests can be used for powers of 5.
- 5 → last digit 0 or 5.
- 25 → last two digits 00, 25, 50 or 75.
- 125 → last three digits divisible by 125.
37. Combined Divisibility Rule
If a and b are co-prime positive integers, then a number is divisible by ab if and only if it is divisible by both a and b.
HCF(a, b) = 1 ⇒ [ab | N ⇔ a | N and b | N]
This principle explains many composite-number divisibility tests.
38. Common Combined Tests
| Number | Quick Test |
| 6 | Divisible by 2 and 3 |
| 12 | Divisible by 3 and 4 |
| 14 | Divisible by 2 and 7 |
| 15 | Divisible by 3 and 5 |
| 18 | Divisible by 2 and 9 |
| 21 | Divisible by 3 and 7 |
| 22 | Divisible by 2 and 11 |
| 24 | Divisible by 3 and 8 |
| 33 | Divisible by 3 and 11 |
| 35 | Divisible by 5 and 7 |
| 36 | Divisible by 4 and 9 |
| 45 | Divisible by 5 and 9 |
| 72 | Divisible by 8 and 9 |
| 77 | Divisible by 7 and 11 |
| 88 | Divisible by 8 and 11 |
| 99 | Divisible by 9 and 11 |
39. Why Co-prime Factors Matter in Combined Tests
Checking divisibility by two factors is sufficient for their product only when the required prime powers are fully represented.
Example: Checking divisibility by 2 and 4 does not separately establish anything stronger than divisibility by 4, because 2 already divides 4.
Safe Method: Break the divisor into co-prime components or compare its complete prime factorisation.
40. Divisibility by 3 and 9 — Important Difference
If the digit sum is divisible by 9, the number is automatically divisible by 3.
But if the digit sum is divisible by 3, the number need not be divisible by 9.
Example: 123 has digit sum 6, so it is divisible by 3 but not by 9.
41. Divisibility by 2 and 4 — Important Difference
Every number divisible by 4 is divisible by 2, but every even number is not necessarily divisible by 4.
Example: 18 is divisible by 2 but not by 4.
42. Divisibility by 4 and 8
Every number divisible by 8 is divisible by 4, but the reverse is not always true.
Example: 20 is divisible by 4 but not by 8.
43. Missing Digit Problems Using Divisibility by 3
Example: Find all digits x such that 42x6 is divisible by 3.
Digit sum:
4 + 2 + x + 6 = 12 + x
12 + x must be divisible by 3.
Therefore:
x = 0, 3, 6 or 9
44. Missing Digit Problems Using Divisibility by 9
Example: Find digit x if 53x4 is divisible by 9.
5 + 3 + x + 4 = 12 + x
12 + x must be a multiple of 9.
For a digit x from 0 to 9, the possible value is:
x = 6
because 12 + 6 = 18.
45. Missing Digit Problems Using Divisibility by 11
Example: Find x if 4x62 is divisible by 11.
Using alternate-position sums:
(4 + 6) − (x + 2) = 8 − x
For x from 0 to 9, this difference must be 0 or ±11. Hence:
x = 8
46. Missing Digit with Two Conditions
Example: Find digit x such that 37x2 is divisible by 6.
The number already ends in 2, so it is divisible by 2.
For divisibility by 3:
3 + 7 + x + 2 = 12 + x
Thus x must be 0, 3, 6 or 9.
Therefore, x ∈ {0, 3, 6, 9}.
47. Missing Digit for Divisibility by 12
Example: Find x such that 13x2 is divisible by 12.
Divisibility by 12 requires divisibility by 3 and 4.
For divisibility by 4, the last two digits x2 must form a multiple of 4. Possible endings are 12, 32, 52, 72 or 92, so x must be odd.
Digit sum = 1 + 3 + x + 2 = 6 + x must be divisible by 3.
Among odd digits, x = 3 or 9 satisfy this condition.
x = 3 or 9
48. Large Numbers and Repeated Digit-Sum Tests
For divisibility by 3 or 9, the digit sum itself may again be reduced by summing its digits.
Example: For 987,654,321:
9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 45
Since 45 is divisible by 9, the original number is divisible by 9 and therefore also by 3.
49. Divisibility of a Sum
If two integers are both divisible by d, then their sum is also divisible by d.
If d | a and d | b, then:
d | (a + b)
Example: 84 and 126 are divisible by 7, so 84 + 126 = 210 is also divisible by 7.
50. Divisibility of a Difference
If two integers are both divisible by d, their difference is also divisible by d.
d | a and d | b ⇒ d | (a − b)
Example: 315 and 140 are divisible by 35, so 315 − 140 = 175 is also divisible by 35.
51. Multiplying a Divisible Number
If d divides n, then d divides every integer multiple of n.
d | n ⇒ d | kn
for every integer k.
52. Solved Example: Divisibility by 11
Check whether 8,493,221 is divisible by 11.
Alternate sums:
8 + 9 + 2 + 1 = 20
4 + 3 + 2 = 9
Difference = 20 − 9 = 11.
Therefore, 8,493,221 is divisible by 11.
53. Solved Example: Divisibility by 7
Check whether 3,486 is divisible by 7.
348 − 2 × 6 = 336
336 = 7 × 48.
Therefore, 3,486 is divisible by 7.
54. Solved Example: Multiple Divisibility
Is 19,800 divisible by 90?
For divisibility by 90, the number must be divisible by 9 and 10.
- It ends in 0 → divisible by 10.
- Digit sum = 1 + 9 + 8 = 18 → divisible by 9.
Therefore, 19,800 is divisible by 90.
55. Solved Example: Divisibility by 24
Check 7,128.
Digit sum:
7 + 1 + 2 + 8 = 18
So it is divisible by 3.
Last three digits = 128, and 128 ÷ 8 = 16.
Therefore, 7,128 is divisible by 24.
56. Common Exam Traps
Trap 1: Divisibility by 2 depends only on the last digit, not the digit sum.
Trap 2: Divisibility by 4 depends on the last two digits, while divisibility by 8 depends on the last three digits.
Trap 3: A number divisible by 3 need not be divisible by 9.
Trap 4: A number divisible by 2 and 3 is divisible by 6 because 2 and 3 are co-prime.
Trap 5: For divisibility by 11, use alternate-position digit sums, not the ordinary digit sum.
Trap 6: Divisibility by 12 requires both the 3-test and the 4-test.
Trap 7: Ending in 5 proves divisibility by 5, but not automatically by 15 or 45.
Trap 8: Divisibility by 25 depends only on the last two digits: 00, 25, 50 or 75.
Trap 9: When combining divisibility tests, make sure the selected factors together contain the complete prime-power structure of the divisor.
Trap 10: Missing-digit questions may have more than one valid digit; do not assume the answer is unique without checking all digits 0–9.

Q6. If the nine-digit number 43x1145y2 is divisible by 88, then what is the value of (3x − 2y), for the smallest possible value of y?
A. 22
B. 20
C. 9
D. 18
Correct Answer: A. 22
Explanation:
Since 88 = 8 × 11, the number must be divisible by both 8 and 11.
For divisibility by 8, the last three digits y2 together with the preceding 5 form 5y2. Testing possible digits gives the smallest valid value y = 1, because 512 is divisible by 8.
Now apply the divisibility rule of 11 to 43x114512. The difference of alternate-position sums gives the condition x = 8.
Therefore:
3x − 2y = 3 × 8 − 2 × 1 = 24 − 2 = 22.

12 + 6 = 18.
Hence x = 6.
Practice MCQ
Q4. If 4x62 is divisible by 11, what is x?
A. 4
B. 6
C. 7
D. 8
Correct Answer: D. 8
Explanation:
Using alternate-position sums:
(4 + 6) − (x + 2) = 8 − x.
For divisibility by 11, this can be 0. Therefore:
8 − x = 0 ⇒ x = 8.
Practice MCQ
Q5. Which of the following numbers is divisible by 12?
A. 2,318
B. 2,316
C. 2,326
D. 2,338
Correct Answer: B. 2,316
Explanation:
Divisibility by 12 requires divisibility by both 3 and 4.
For 2,316:
Digit sum = 2 + 3 + 1 + 6 = 12 → divisible by 3.
Last two digits = 16 → divisible by 4.
Therefore, 2,316 is divisible by 12.
Practice MCQ
Q6. Which of the following numbers is divisible by 25?
A. 7,640
B. 8,275
C. 9,565
D. 6,985
Correct Answer: B. 8,275
Explanation:
A number is divisible by 25 when its last two digits are 00, 25, 50 or 75.
8,275 ends in 75, so it is divisible by 25.
Practice MCQ
Q7. Which of the following numbers is divisible by 13?
A. 286
B. 295
C. 304
D. 317
Correct Answer: A. 286
Explanation:
Apply the rule for 13:
28 + 4 × 6 = 28 + 24 = 52.
52 = 13 × 4.
Therefore, 286 is divisible by 13.
Practice MCQ
Q8. Which of the following numbers is divisible by 72?
A. 5,124
B. 5,184
C. 5,224
D. 5,284
Correct Answer: B. 5,184
Explanation:
72 = 8 × 9, so the number must be divisible by both 8 and 9.
For 5,184:
Digit sum = 5 + 1 + 8 + 4 = 18 → divisible by 9.
Last three digits = 184 → 184 ÷ 8 = 23.
Hence 5,184 is divisible by 72.
Practice MCQ
Q9. Which of the following statements is correct?
A. Every number divisible by 3 is also divisible by 9.
B. Every number divisible by 8 is also divisible by 4.
C. Every even number is divisible by 4.
D. Every number ending in 5 is divisible by 15.
Correct Answer: B. Every number divisible by 8 is also divisible by 4.
Explanation:
Since 8 = 4 × 2, every multiple of 8 is automatically a multiple of 4.
The other statements are false. For example, 12 is divisible by 3 but not 9; 18 is even but not divisible by 4; and 25 ends in 5 but is not divisible by 15.
Practice MCQ
Q10. If the number 7x48 is divisible by 11, what is the value of x?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 5
Correct Answer: C. 3
Explanation:
For divisibility by 11:
(7 + 4) − (x + 8) = 11 − x − 8 = 3 − x.
For divisibility by 11, the difference may be 0.
3 − x = 0 ⇒ x = 3.
a = bq
Intermediate result 0
12 = 3 × 4 तथा HCF(3, 4) = 1। इसलिए कोई संख्या 12 से विभाज्य होगी यदि वह 3 और 4 दोनों से विभाज्य हो।
28 + 4 × 6 = 28 + 24 = 52
52 = 13 × 4, इसलिए 286, 13 से विभाज्य है।
14 = 2 × 7 और दोनों co-prime हैं। इसलिए संख्या 14 से विभाज्य होगी यदि वह 2 और 7 दोनों से विभाज्य हो।
15 = 3 × 5 और HCF(3, 5) = 1।
18 = 2 × 9 और HCF(2, 9) = 1।
24 = 3 × 8 और HCF(3, 8) = 1।
36 = 4 × 9 और HCF(4, 9) = 1।
40 = 5 × 8 और HCF(5, 8) = 1। इसलिए संख्या 40 से विभाज्य होगी यदि वह 5 तथा 8 दोनों से विभाज्य हो।
45 = 5 × 9।
72 = 8 × 9 तथा HCF(8, 9) = 1।
75 = 3 × 25 तथा HCF(3, 25) = 1।
88 = 8 × 11 तथा HCF(8, 11) = 1।
90 = 9 × 10 तथा HCF(9, 10) = 1।
99 = 9 × 11 तथा HCF(9, 11) = 1।
HCF(a, b) = 1 ⇒ [ab | N ⇔ a | N तथा b | N]
Combined Divisibility Tests
Missing Digit Question
x = 0, 3, 6 या 9
Missing Digit Question
x = 6
Missing Digit Question
Alternate-position sums
(4 + 6) − (x + 2) = 8 − x
x = 8
46. दो Conditions वाला Missing Digit Question
3 + 7 + x + 2 = 12 + x
x ∈ {0, 3, 6, 9}
Missing Digit Question
x = 3 या 9
Digit-Sum Test
d | a और d | b ⇒ d | (a + b)
d | a और d | b ⇒ d | (a − b)
Alternate sums:
8 + 9 + 2 + 1 = 20
4 + 3 + 2 = 9
348 − 2 × 6 = 336
336 = 7 × 48।
Multiple Divisibility

A. 22
B. 20
C. 9
D. 18
सही उत्तर: A. 22
88 = 8 × 11, इसलिए संख्या 8 और 11 दोनों से विभाज्य होनी चाहिए।
3x − 2y = 3 × 8 − 2 × 1 = 24 − 2 = 22।
