Digital Payments and Banking Technology
Digital payments involve transferring money or making payments electronically. Banking technology includes computerised account management, ATMs, online banking and electronic payment systems.
Examination scope: This chapter covers general Computer Awareness for SSC, JSSC, Railways, banking and other state recruitment examinations. It focuses on full forms, device functions, differences between payment systems and safe practices.
1. Basic Digital Payment Concepts
- Payer: The person or organisation making a payment.
- Payee/Beneficiary: The person or organisation receiving a payment.
- Debit: An entry recording money leaving a customer's deposit account.
- Credit: An entry recording money entering a customer's deposit account.
- Authentication: Verifying a user's identity.
- Authorization: Granting permission for an action or payment.
- Settlement: Discharging financial obligations between participating institutions arising from payments.
Example: When a customer pays a merchant ₹500 from a deposit account, the payer's account is debited and the merchant's account is credited.
2. Core Banking Solution and Banking Channels
CBS — Core Banking Solution: A centralised banking arrangement through which connected branches and authorised channels access account and transaction information using a shared banking system. Subject to the bank's available services, it enables banking activities through another connected branch.
| Channel | Main use |
| Internet Banking | Accessing banking services through the bank's official website |
| Mobile Banking | Accessing authorised mobile-based banking services |
| ATM | Cash withdrawal and other services supported by the machine |
| Branch Banking | Conducting banking activities through a branch |
Remember: Mobile banking is a service channel; NEFT or IMPS is a fund-transfer system. A banking application can offer several payment systems.
3. ATM, POS and Micro-ATM
- ATM — Automated Teller Machine: A self-service banking machine. Cash withdrawal is a major function.
- POS — Point of Sale: The location or arrangement where a sale payment is accepted. A card POS terminal is a device used to accept card payments.
- Micro-ATM: A small device, commonly operated by a banking representative, for supported basic banking services. It need not dispense cash automatically like a conventional ATM.
Exam fact: “Any Time Money” is not the correct expansion of ATM.
4. Debit Cards, Credit Cards and Prepaid Cards
| Card | Usual source of funds | Main distinction |
| Debit Card | Linked bank account | Generally uses funds available in the account |
| Credit Card | Credit limit approved by the issuer | A borrowing facility requiring repayment under its terms |
| Prepaid Card | Value loaded in advance | Uses the available prepaid balance |
- PIN: Personal Identification Number.
- OTP: One-Time Password.
- CVV: Card Verification Value. It is a card security detail, not the ATM PIN.
- RuPay: An Indian card payment network, not a type of bank account.
5. NEFT
NEFT — National Electronic Funds Transfer: An electronic fund-transfer system that processes transactions in batches. It is available around the clock on all days.
NEFT should not be considered restricted to normal banking hours. Online system availability and branch-counter opening hours are separate matters.
6. RTGS
RTGS — Real Time Gross Settlement: Transactions are settled individually in real time.
- Real Time: Processing without waiting for a later batch.
- Gross: Individual settlement of each transaction.
- The minimum customer RTGS transfer is ₹2 lakh.
- It is available around the clock. RBI sets no system-level maximum, although banks or channels may impose their own limits.
7. IMPS and Comparison of Major Transfer Systems
IMPS — Immediate Payment Service: NPCI's instant interbank electronic fund-transfer service, available around the clock. It should not be understood as a service limited exclusively to mobile payments.
| System | Distinguishing feature |
| NEFT | Batch-based processing |
| RTGS | Real-time, transaction-by-transaction gross settlement |
| IMPS | Instant interbank fund transfer |
| UPI | Instant payments through UPI-enabled applications |
Limits and charges: Do not assume that every application, bank and payment category has identical limits or fees. Consult current official rules for such details.
8. UPI, UPI ID and BHIM
- UPI: Unified Payments Interface, a payment system developed by NPCI.
- UPI ID/VPA: A payment address, such as name@provider. VPA means Virtual Payment Address.
- BHIM: Bharat Interface for Money, a UPI-based payment application.
Key distinction: UPI is the payment system; BHIM is an application using that system.
Safety: A UPI PIN is not required merely to receive money. Entering a PIN to approve a payment at someone's request is not the same as receiving money.
9. IFSC, MICR and CTS
| Term | Full form | Purpose |
| IFSC | Indian Financial System Code | Identifying a bank branch for electronic transfers |
| MICR | Magnetic Ink Character Recognition | Machine recognition of characters printed using special magnetic ink on cheques |
| CTS | Cheque Truncation System | Clearing using electronic cheque images and associated data |
IFSC structure: It contains 11 characters. The first four letters identify the bank, the fifth character is 0, and the final six characters identify the branch.
Truncation: Replacing the onward movement of a physical cheque for clearing with its electronic image. It does not mean physically cutting the cheque.
10. AePS and Financial Inclusion
AePS — Aadhaar Enabled Payment System: A system providing supported basic banking services through Aadhaar authentication. It can be used for services such as cash withdrawal at authorised touchpoints.
For example, a customer may withdraw cash from an Aadhaar-linked bank account through an authorised representative using biometric authentication. Available services depend on the bank and touchpoint.
Financial inclusion: Extending formal financial services to people whose access to banking services is limited.
11. Wallets, Payment Gateways and QR Codes
- Stored-value Wallet: Uses a balance loaded in advance for payments. An application may provide both wallet and other payment facilities.
- Payment Gateway: A technical service that securely passes payment information to the relevant payment-processing participants during an online purchase.
- QR Code — Quick Response Code: A two-dimensional code that can encode a payment address or other information.
- Static QR: Generally contains fixed information.
- Dynamic QR: Can be generated for a specific transaction and may contain an amount or reference.
Remember: Displaying a QR code does not prove that a payment has succeeded. Check the payment status in the authorised application or account.
12. NACH, Bharat Connect and FASTag
- NACH — National Automated Clearing House: An arrangement for high-volume, repetitive electronic payments and collections, such as salary credits or authorised recurring debits.
- Mandate: Permission for a payment or debit under specified conditions.
- BBPS — Bharat Bill Payment System: An integrated arrangement for different bill payments, currently branded Bharat Connect.
- NETC — National Electronic Toll Collection: An electronic toll-collection arrangement.
- FASTag: Uses RFID technology for toll payments.
- RFID: Radio Frequency Identification.
13. Contactless Payments and Tokenisation
NFC — Near Field Communication: A short-range wireless communication technology. Supported contactless cards and devices use it for tap-to-pay transactions.
Card Tokenisation: Using an alternative token instead of actual card details. This helps reduce unnecessary exposure of sensitive card details during payment processing.
Distinction: Tokenisation substitutes data. It does not increase the card balance, create a new bank account or eliminate every type of fraud.
14. Safe Transactions and Complaints
- Check the recipient's name, address and amount before paying.
- Do not share OTPs, PINs or CVV with another person.
- Do not install screen-sharing or remote-access applications at a stranger's direction.
- Verify the credit in your account instead of relying on screenshots or verbal claims.
- Do not repeatedly retry a pending payment without checking its status.
- Keep the transaction reference, time, amount and complaint number.
- Immediately notify the bank or payment service about an unauthorised transaction. In India, financial cyber fraud can be reported through 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in.
Remember: Prompt reporting matters, but filing a complaint does not guarantee recovery of the money.
15. Quick Revision
- ATM = Automated Teller Machine; POS = Point of Sale.
- Debit Card: linked account; Credit Card: approved borrowing limit.
- NEFT: batches; RTGS: individual real-time settlement.
- IMPS correctly expands to Immediate Payment Service.
- IFSC contains 11 characters; its fifth character is zero.
- CTS uses cheque images.
- FASTag is associated with RFID.
- Tokenisation replaces actual card details with a token.

- Payee/Beneficiary:
2. Core Banking Solution
| Internet Banking |
| Mobile Banking |
| Branch Banking |
3. ATM, POS और Micro-ATM
- ATM — Automated Teller Machine:
- POS — Point of Sale:
परीक्षा तथ्य: ATM का पूर्ण रूप “Any Time Money” नहीं है।
4. Debit Card, Credit Card और Prepaid Card
| Debit Card |
- PIN: Personal Identification Number।
- OTP: One-Time Password।
- CVV: Card Verification Value।
5. NEFT
6. RTGS
RTGS — Real Time Gross Settlement:
| NEFT | Batch-based processing |
| RTGS | Real-time, transaction-by-transaction gross settlement |
8. UPI, UPI ID और BHIM
- UPI: Unified Payments Interface; NPCI
- BHIM: Bharat Interface for Money; UPI
| IFSC | Indian Financial System Code |
| MICR | Magnetic Ink Character Recognition |
11. Wallet, Payment Gateway और QR Code
- RFID: Radio Frequency Identification।
13. Contactless Payment और Tokenisation
- Transaction reference,
- ATM = Automated Teller Machine; POS = Point of Sale।
- NEFT: batches; RTGS: व्यक्तिगत real-time settlement।
